Originally operating steamships in the coastwise lumber trade, the company eventually expanded into tug and barge transport, operating under the banner of the Olson Ocean Towing Company.

In 1975, Oliver J. Olson and Company was acquired by the Crown Zellerbach Corporation of San Francisco, California.
