Built in 1967, by McKay-Cormack Limited of Victoria, British Columbia as the Island Chief for Island Tug and Barge Limited of Vancouver, British Columbia. A subsidy of McAllister Towing Limited Montreal of Montreal.
In 1969, Island Tug and Barge Limited was acquired by Genstar Limited of Vancouver, British Columbia. Where the tug initially retained her name.
In 1971, Genstar Limited partnered with the Dillingham Corporation to merge Island Tug and Barge with the Vancouver Tug Boat Company, creating Seaspan Marine Incorporated of Vancouver, British Columbia. Where the tug was renamed as the Seaspan Chief. She was a single screw tug, rated at 1,200 horsepower.
