GENERAL OGLETHORPE

Built in 1943, by Ira S. Bushey and Son Incorporated of Brooklyn, New York (hull #529) as the WYT-97 (Ojibwa) for the United States Coast Guard.

In 1980, the tug was decommissioned. And, was made available for sale for reuse.

In 1980, she was acquired by the Crescent Towing and Salvage Company Incorporated of New Orleans, Louisiana. Where she underwent extensive renovations. And the tug was renamed as the John G. Amato.

In 1986, the Crescent Towing and Salvage Company renamed the tug as as the General Oglethorpe.

In 2017, the tug was acquired by state of South Carolina, and was reefed in 105 feet of water, 30 miles offshore of Charleston, South Carolina, on May 16th, 2018. She was a single screw tug, rated at 4,000 horsepower.
