Built in 1966, by the John Bludworth Shipyard Incorporated of Corpus Christi, Texas (hull #65) as the Tom Smith.

The tug was later acquired by the Hays Tug and Launch Company of Wallingford, Pennsylvania. Where she was renamed as the Purple Hays.

She is a twin screw towboat, rated at 3,600 horsepower.
