Built in 1972, by Main Iron Works Incorporated of Houma, Louisiana (hull #253) as the John G. for John G. Marine Services Incorporated of Houma, Louisiana.

In 1991, she was acquired by the Dunlap Towing Company of La Conner, Washington. Where the tug was renamed as Gene Dunlap.

Powered by two, sixteen cylinder, Caterpillar 3516-DITA diesel engines. With Reintjes reduction gears. Turning two, cast steel, fixed pitch, propellers. She is a twin screw tug, rated at 3,420 horsepower.

Her electrical service is provided by two, 90kW, Delco generator sets. The tug's capacities are 793,700 gallons of fuel, 1,555 gallons of lube oil, 10,323 gallons of water, and 15,374 gallons of ballast.

The towing gear consists of a single, Smatco towing winch. Outfitted with 2,600(ft) of 2(in) towing wire.
