Built in 1966 by the Nichols Boat Works Company of Hood River, Oregon as the Knappton (hull #165) for the Knappton Towboat Company of Astoria, Oregon.

The tug was later acquired by Diversified Marine Incorporated of Portland, Oregon. Where she was renamed as the Earl R.

In 2009, she was acquired by the SDS Lumber Company of Bingen, Washington. Where the tug was renamed as the Bruce M.
