Built in 1970 by Bender Welding and Machine at Mobile, Alabama as the Barry G (hull #407) for John E. Graham and Sons of Houma, Louisiana.
In 1995, the tug was acquired by American Workboats Incorporated of Honolulu, Hawaii. Where she was renamed as the American Islander.
Her powerplant consists of two Detroit Diesel V-16-71 diesels turning two screws. For a rated 1,200 horsepower. Electrical service is provided by a 40kW John Deere generator.
Capacities include 21,000 gallons of fuel and 23,263 gallons of water. Towing equipment consists of a single hydraulic capstan with 1,500' of 1-3/8" wire. An additional single drum with 1,300' of 7/8" wire is fitted to the bow.
