Built in 1981, by the Dravo SteelShip Corporation of Pine Bluff, Arkansas (hull #6170) as the Walter E. Blessey for Blessey Marine Services Incorporated of Harahan, Louisiana.

In 2016, the tug was acquired by Ohio River Salvage Incorporated of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Where she was renamed as the Vernon M. Weiland.

In 2002, the tug was rebuilt at Ashton Marine Incorporated of Harvey, Louisiana. Powered by two, GM 16V-149 diesel engines. With Twin Disc reduction gears, at a ratio of 7:1. Turning two, stainless steel, fixed pitch propellers. She is a twin screw towboat, rated at 1,800 horsepower.
