Built in 1965, by the Dravo Corporation of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (hull #4788) as the Elaine G. for Ingram Barge Lines of Paducah, Kentucky. A subsidiary of Midland Enterprises Incorporated of Cincinnati, Ohio.

In 2004, the tug was acquired by Red Star Towing Incorporated of Charleston, West Virginia. Where she was renamed as the Mary Ellen Jones. However, the tug was operated by Madison Coal and Supply Company of Charleston, West Virginia.

In 2010, the Madison Coal and Supply Company, become Amherst Madison Incorporated of Charleston, West Virginia. Where the tug retained her name. And, ownership of the tug was retained by Red Star Towing Incorporated of Charleston, West Virginia.

Powered by two GM 16-645E7B diesel engines. With Western reduction gears, at a ratio of 4.12:1, with kort nozzles. She is twin screw pushboat, rated at 4,320 horsepower.
