Built in 1945, by the Dravo Corporation of Neville Island, Pennsylvania (hull #2390) as the Buckeye for the Dravo Corporation of Nellville Island, Pennsylvania.

The tug was later acquired by the Madison Coal and Supply Company of Charleston, West Virgina where she was renamed as the Fred Way. However, The Madison Coal and Supply Company, would later become Amherst Madison Incorporated of Charleston, West Virginia.

The tug is twin screw, rated at 1,800 horsepower.
