Built in 1963, by the Equitable Equipment Company Incorporated of New Orleans, Louisiana (hull #1290) as the Betty Smith for the Crescent Towing and Salvage Company Incorporated of New Orleans, Louisiana.

In 1996, the Crescent Towing and Salvage Company renamed the tug as the Alabama.

Rebuilt in 1996, she is a twin screw tug, with kort nozzles rated at 2,400 horsepower.
