Built in 1981, by Orange Shipbuilding Incorporated of Orange, Texas (hull #225) as the Ponca for the Conoco Phillips Company of Houston, Texas.

The tug was later acquired by KMD Marine Incorporated of Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. Where she retained her name.

She is a twin screw towboat, rated at 800 horsepower.
