Built in 1980, by Gulfgate Shipyard Incorporated of Port Arthur, Texas (hull #II) as the Norma W. for Transportation Techniques Incorporated of Seabrook, Texas.

In 1983, the tug was acquired by Williamson Boat Works Incorporated of Riviera, Texas. Where she was renamed as the Ashley Renee.

In 1996, she was acquired by Brown Water Marine Service Incorporated of Ingleside, Texas. Where the tug was renamed as the Brown Water VII.

Re powered in 2003, the tug is powered by two Volvo TAMD165 diesel engines. With Twin Disc reduction gears, at a ratio of 5.05:1. She is a twin screw towboat, rated at 800 horsepower.
