Built in 1977, by Rayco Shipbuilders and Repairs Incorporated of Bourg, Louisiana (hull #54) as the Herndon R. for the Tenn-Tom Towing Company of Mobile, Alabama.

In 2006, the tug was acquired by Martin Marine Incorporated of LaPorte, Texas. Where she retained her name.

In 2019, she was acquired by River Ventures Incorporated of St. Amant, Louisiana. Where the tug was renames as the Independence.

Powered by two, Mitsubishi S12A2-MPTA diesel engines. With Twin Disc reduction gears, at a ratio of 7:1. She is a twin screw towboat, rated at 1,800 horsepower.
