Built in 1942, by the United States Coast Guard at Curtis Bay in Baltimore, Maryland (hull #WYTM-60) as the USCGC Manitou (WYT-60) for the United States Coast Guard.

Her keel was laid on May 29th, 1942. She was commissioned on February 15th, 1943. The tug was assigned to Boston, Massachusetts where she served on the waters near Greenland. She was later reassigned to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The tug was decommissioned on November 19th, 1980.

In 1984, the tug was acquired by Malcolm Marine Incorporated of St. Clair, Michigan. Where she was renamed as the Manitou, and was "laid up" at St. Clair, Michigan.

In 1996, Malcolm Marine Incorporated completely rebuild as well as repowered the tug and placed her back into active service.

Originally powered by two, Ingersoll-Rand Diesel Engines driving an electric motor producing 1,000. In 1996, she was repowered with a single, EMD 16-645-E2 diesel engine with a Haley reduction gear. She is a single screw tug, rated at 2,200 horsepower.
