Built in 1971, by Zigler Shipyards Incorporated of Jennings, Louisiana (hull #220) as the Marco Island for Weeks Marine Incorporated of Cranford, New Jersey.
In 2004, the tug was acquired by Viking Tug and Barge Incorporated of Verplanck, New York. Where she was renamed as the Fred Johannsen.
Powered by two, Detroit Diesel 8-71 diesel engines. Turning two, fixed pitch propellers. She is a twin screw tug, rated at 600 horsepower.
Her electrical service is provided by two, 30kW, Detroit Diesel generator sets. The tug's capacities are 2,700 gallons of fuel, 30 gallons of hydraulic oil, and 500 gallons of water.
The towing equipment consists of two, manual face winches mounted on the bow.
