Built in 19444, by the Decatur Iron and Steel Company of Decatur, Alabama (hull #ST693) as the ST-693 for the United States Army.

The tug was later transferred to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Where she was renamed as the Wilmington.

In 1979, she as acquired by the Stevens Towing Company of Charleston, South Carolina. Where the tug was renamed as the Sea Islander.

In 1979, the tug was acquired by the Ryba Marine Construction Company of Cheboygan, Michigan. Where she was renamed as the Kathy Lynn.

Originally powered by a single, six cylinder, Busch-Sulzer 6DFMT-17 diesel engine rated at 650 horsepower. The tug was repowered in 1991, with a single, sixteen cylinder, Cummins KTA3067M diesel engine rated 1,250 horsepower. And in 2006, she was repowered with a single Cummins KTA50C diesel engine rated at 1,600 horsepower.
