Built in 1980, by the Louis G. Ortis Boat Company of Krotz Springs, Louisiana (hull #81) as the Alamo Sun for Alamo Barge Lines Incorporated of Houston, Texas.

In 1985, the tug was acquired by Hollywood Marine Incorporated of Houston, Texas. Where she was renamed as the Sun.

In 1999, she was acquired by the Kirby Corporation of Channelview, Texas. Where the tug retained her name.

In 2014, the tug was acquired by Chem Carriers LLC. of Sunshine, Louisiana. Where she was renamed as the Ava Hays.

Powered by two, Detroit Series 60 diesel engines. With Twin Disc reduction gears, at a ratio of 6:1. She is a twin screw towboat, rated at 1,000 horsepower.
