Built in 1970, by Southern Shipbuilding of Slidell, Louisiana (hull #82) as the Cheraw (YTB 802) for the United States Navy.

Her keel was laid on March 12, 1969, and the tug was launched on September 20th, 1969. She was delivered to the United States Navy on January 29, 1970. The tug was struck from the naval register on the 29th of February 1996.

On December 29th of 1996 the tug was transferred to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where she was renamed as the Cheraw .

She is a single screw tug rated at 2,000 horsepower.
