Built in 1953, by St. Louis Shipbuilding of St. Louis, Missouri as the J.W. Rose for the Rose Barge Line Incorporated of St. Louis, Missouri.

In 1961, she was rebuilt with a retractable wheelhouse.

In 1964, the tug was sold. Where she was renamed as the Kristina H.

In 1966, the tug was sold. Where she was renamed the as the Emma V.

In 1988, the tug was sold. Where she was renamed as the Crystal King.

In 1993, she was acquired by the Midwest Material Company of Perry, Ohio. Where she was renamed as the Midwest.

In 2003, the tug was placed out of service.

In 2007, she was acquired by the Madison Coal and Supply Company of Charleston, West Virginia. Where she was renamed as the Marlie Price. And, rebuilt as a conventional towboat.

In 2010, the Madison Coal and Supply Company, become Amherst Madison Incorporated of Charleston, West Virginia. Where the tug retained her name.

In 2014, she was acquired by the Cenac Towing Company of Houma, Louisiana. Where she was renamed as the Marlie Cenac.

In 2019, the Cenac Towing Company was acquired by the Kirby Corporation of Channelview, Texas. Where the tug retained her name.

In 2020, she was acquired by the Excell Marine Corporation of South Point, Ohio. Where the tug was renamed as the Dodson Thornton.

Powered by two, Cummins KTA38-M1 diesel engines. With Falk reduction gears, at a ratio of 4:1. With kort nozzles. She is a twin screw towhboat, rated at 1,000 horsepower.
