Built in 1961, by Burton Shipyard Incorporated of Port Arthur, Texas (hull #312) as the Brahma for Tidewater Marine Services Incorporated of New Orleans, Louisiana.

In 1996, the tug was acquired by Evansville Marine Services Company of Owensboro, Kentucky. Where she was renamed as the W.C. James.

In 2016, the Evansville Marine Services Company, renamed the tug as the John M.

She is a twin screw tug, rated at 750 horsepower.
