Built in 1918 by W.R. Menchions and Company Limited of Vancouver, British Columbia as the Tonopah for Belmont Surf Inlet Mines Limited of Vancouver, British Columbia.
In 1926, the tug was acquired by Benjamin Gilbert of Vancouver, British Columbia. Where she retained her name.
In 1937, she was acquired by Standard Towing Company Limited of Vancouver, British Columbia. Where the tug was renamed as the Standby.
In 1946, the tug was acquired by Island Tug and Barge Limited of Vancouver, British Columbia. Where the tug was renamed as the Island Imp.
In 1960, Island Tug and Barge Limited was acquired by McAllister Towing Limited Montreal of Montreal, Quebec, and began operating as an independent subsidiary.
In 1962, the tug was retired from active service.
In 1964, she was sunk as part of a jetty.
In 1936, the tug was repowered with a Gardner diesel, rated at 54 horsepower. In 1945, the tug was repowered with a diesel rated at 100 horsepower. And, in 1946 the tug was repowered with a diesel engine rated at 115 horsepower.
