Built in 1984, by by St. Louis Ship Incorporated of St. Louis, Missouri (hull #5062) as the Mobil Joliet for the Mobil Oil Corporation of New York, New York.

In 1992, the Mobil Oil Corporation renamed the tug as the Chippewa.

In 1999, the Exxon Oil Company merged with the Mobil Oil Corporation to form the ExxonMobil Corporation of Irving, Texas. The SeaRiver Maritime Company continued to operate as a subsidy of the ExxonMobil Corporation. Where the tug was renamed as the S/R Joliet.

In 2003, the tug was acquired by the Kirby Corporation of Channelview, Texas. Where she was renamed as the City of Joliet.

Powered by two, Wartsila 12V22HF diesel engines. With Lufkin reduction gears, at a ratio of 4.5:1. She is a twin screw towboat, rated at 3,600 horsepower.
