Built in 1983, by Crumpler's Shipbuilding Company of Bridge City, Texas (hull #846) as the Karl G. Andren for Higman Barge Lines Incorporated of Orange, Texas.

In 2007, she was acquired by the Coastal Tug and Barge Company of Miami, Florida. Where she was renamed as the Coastal Five Rivers.

In 2009, the tug was acquired by Transmontaigne Product Carriers Incorporated of Denver, Colorado. Where she was renamed as the Five Rivers.

In 2009, the tug was acquired by Teppco Marine Services of Houma, Louisiana. Where the tug retained her name.

In 2009, she was acquired by Enterprise Marine Services of Houma, Louisiana. Where she retained her name.

In 2011, the tug was acquired by the Kirby Corporation of Channelview, Texas. Where she retained her name.

In 2014, she was acquired by Echo Towing Services Incorporated of Baytown, Texas. Where the tug was renamed as the Phyllis E.

Repowered in 1990, the tug is driven by two Cummins KTA19-M diesel engines. With Twin Disc reduction gears, at a ratio of 4.5:1. She is a twin screw, towboat, rated at 1,000 horsepower.
