Built in 1897, at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard at Norfolk, Virginia (hull #YT5) as the YT-5 (Samoset) for the United States Navy.

Her keel was laid down on January 13th, 1896. She was launched on March 20th, 1897. And, she was delivered to the United States Navy on July 17th, 1920.

In 1944, the United Stated Navy redesignated the tug as the YTM-5.

In 1948, the tug was transferred to the United Stated Maritime Commission. Where she retained her designation.

In 1948, the tug was acquired by the Norfolk Dredging Company of Norfolk, Virginia. Where she was renamed as the Oscar F. Smith.

In 1965, she was acquired by Winslow Marine Incorporated of Falmouth, Maine. Where she was renamed as the Alice M. Winslow.

In 1989, the tug was eventually acquired by an individual named Milton Gomez of the Dominican Republic. Where the the tug retained her name, and she was reflagged.

In 1989, while towing the tank barge Gran Tor. The tug grounded on a reef at Nisibon Beach off of the coast of the Dominican Republic. She was declared a constructive total loss. Powered by a single, Fairbanks Morse diesel engine. She was a single screw tug, rated at 900 horsepower.
