Built in 1957, by Pelican Marine Ways Incorporated of Houma, Louisiana (hull #34) as the Joe Jr.

In 1996, the tug was acquired by Viking Tug and Barge Incorporated of Verplanck, New York. Where she was renamed as the Emil P. Johannsen.

In 2017, she was phased out of active service. And was "laid up" at Verplanck, New York.

Powered by a single, Detroit Diesel 12-71 diesel engine. She is a single screw tug, rated at 289 horsepower.
