Built in 1973, by McDermott Shipyard Incorporated of Morgan City, Louisiana (hull #179) as the Amy Moran for the Moran Towing Corporation of New York, New York.
In 2020, the tug was acquired by Stasinos Marine LLC. of Weymouth, Massachusetts. Where she was renamed as the John Joseph.
Powered by two, twelve cylinder, EMD 12-645-E2 diesel engines. With Falk 1625 MRSP / MRPF; reduction gears, at a ratio of 4.731:1. Turning two, bronze, fixed pitch propellers. She is a twin screw tug, rated at 3,400 horsepower.
Her electrical service is provided by two, 75kW Delco generator sets, driven by two, Detroit Diesel 6-71 diesel engines. The tug's capacities are 53,300 gallons of fuel, 1,028 gallons of lube oil, 50 gallons of lube oil, 550 gallons of slop oil, 5,000 gallons of potable water, and 39,464 gallons of ballast.
The towing equipment consists of a Markey DD-761, single drum towing winch. Outfitted with 2,100(ft) of 2(in) stainless steel, towing wire. As well as a 10 horsepower, New England hydraulic / electric capstan on her stern. The tug is also fitted with an elevating wheelhouse.
