Built in 1969, by the LeMay Barge and Supply Company of Greenville, Mississippi (hull #319) as the Joe Taylor for the Volunteer Towing Service Incorporated of Greenville, Mississippi.

In 1988, the tug was acquired by the Arkansas River Company of Greenville, Mississippi. Where she was renamed as the Johnny Murdock.

In 1996, she was acquired by Midland Enterprises Incorporated of Cincinnati, Ohio. Where the tug was renamed as the Mississippi Star.

In 2002, the tug was acquired by the Ingram Barge Company of Nashville, Tennessee. Where she retained her name.

In 2004, the Ingram Barge Company renamed the tug as the Terry Gifford.

Powered by two, Cummins KTA19-M3 diesel engines. With Twin Disc reduction gears, at a ratio of 6.11:1. She is a twin screw towboat, rated at 1,200 horsepower.
