In 1830, O.H. Ingram was born, and when he came of age he began working at saw mill in upstate New York called the Harris and Bronson saw mill. The mill's owner soon recognized the initiative of Ingram. Soon after Ingram was assigned to act in place of Bronson in his absence.

Ingram would go on to plan, and manage multiple steam saw mills. This led him develop the "Gang Edger" which would revolutionize the saw mill industry.

In 1857, Ingram settled in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and formed the Ingram and Kennedy lumber business. This established the first connection for Ingram to the rivers. Utilizing the Chippewa and Mississippi Rivers to transport lumber.

In 1881, the Empire Lumber Company was formed after the consolidation of multiple lumber operations. O.H. Ingram would serve as president of the newly formed company. In 1906, the O.H. Ingram Company was established and was primarily operated by Erskine B. "E.B. Ingram. On October 16th, 1918 O.H. Ingram passed away.

In the 1920's, the O.H. Ingram Company was organized under the leadership of Erskine B. "E.B." Ingram and prospered. The company would further diversify their business interests.

In 1942, the Wood River River Oil Barge Company's refinery was completed along the banks of the Illinois River. Ingram established the Wood River Oil barge company to transport product produced at the refinery.

In 1946, the Ingram Company became branded as the Ingram Products Company after acquiring the Wood River Oil Barge Company. Terminals were constructed in St. Paul, Minnesota and Louisville, Kentucky. By the late 1940's the terminals were producing 7,500 to 30,000 barrels per day.

In the late 1950's the Ingram Barge Company was established. As well as the Ingram Oil Company. In the 1960's, Ingram acquired the Cumberland River Sand and Gravel Company and the Barrett Lines Incorporated. These companies would become the Ingram Materials Company.

In 1978, the companies would be divided under the banner of the Ingram Corporation. In 1984, the company acquired Ohio Barge Line from U.S. Steel. And in 1994, Ingram acquired the M/G Transport Company of Cincinnati, Ohio.

In 2002, the company acquired Midland Enterprises, the Ohio River Company LLC. and Orgulf LLC. In 2005, Ingram acquired the Riverway company. In 2012, the company acquired United Barge Line (formerly a division of the Tampa Electric Company "TECO").
