American Tugs Incorporated was founded in 2002 with the two tugs the El Morro and the Don Alberto.

Later that year the company acquired Puerto Rico Operations Incorporated serviced the south and east coasts of the island of Puerto Rico as well as San Juan Harbor.

The company provides ship docking services as well as rescue towing operations around the Caribbean Sea, including petroleum transportation from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

American Tugs Incorporated also provides terminal towage requirements of the Buckeye Partners L.P. Petroleum Terminal in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. As well as, the AES coal fired generator plant in Guayama, Puerto Rico; the PREPA generating plant in Aguirre, Puerto Rico, and the Ecoeléctrica LNG tanker terminal in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico.

The company services LNG tankers as part of partnership with South Puerto Rico Towing and Svitzer Americas under a Joint Venture that operates as Guayanilla Towage Group Incorporated of Guayanilla, Puerto Rico.

American Tugs Incorporates also maintains a deck cargo barge that transports aggregate materials, construction materials, equipment and scrap steel throughout the Caribbean Sea. Including the transportation of salt in bulk between the Yucatan Peninsula and various ports in Central America.
